In this workshop, participants will be writing original music from prompts that require inquiry into their personal history under the guidance of artist-in-residence Amanda Ekery. Each workshop will delve into aspects of oral history, personal memoir, shared experiences, and song frameworks to write lyrics, create melodies, and leave with a song that is yours. Workshops culminate in a final concert where participants can perform their songs, share their lyrics, and talk about their creative process.

Meet special guests, musicians Johnny Gandelsman & Kinan Azmeh, at Amanda’s workshop on Thursday, Sept. 22. Then, at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, join Johnny and Kinan in The Annex @ AANM for a concert celebrating their 20-year friendship, called This Is America. Click here to learn more and purchase tickets.

All AANM guests are required to remain masked and fill out a health screening form upon check-in in order to attend this event.

FAQ

    1. I have never written a song before, can I come?
Yes! No previous musical experience is required. We will be focusing on lyric writing, learning song forms, and pairing your words to music together.
    2. I have musical experience, is this for me?
Yes, please bring your expertise to share with the group. If you play an instrument, you are welcome to bring it to serve as your accompaniment and can play for others if interested as well.
    3. Age requirement?
This is for people 12 and up.
    4. Do I have to attend every session?
It is not required that you attend every session as each workshop will focus on a different topic, but you are encouraged to attend all if available! Participation in the final concert is open to anyone who has participated in one or more workshop.
    5. What do I need to bring?
Please bring something to write with and on, this could be a journal or spiral notebook or loose paper to keep track of your ideas. Being willing to experiment, to be vulnerable, and to be respectful of the creative process for yourself and others is also needed.
