See the world through the lens of photography this Spring!
Register for the 2021 Spring Semester of our Sura Arts Academy, where students will learn the art of photography during a 10-week online course—either beginner and intermediate—designed to help them shape their photographic skills and share stories about their lives, community and culture, using elements of social justice, journalism and empowerment, all through the lens of photography. This semester’s theme is documenting our world in the age of Covid.
With the help of local, expert photographers, students will narrate and document their reality through photography and develop skills in composition, lighting, composition and storytelling. The curriculum includes visual presentations, photographic challenges, activities, discussions, critiquing/analyzing and more. Students’ work will be celebrated in the annual SURA Student Photography Exhibition in 2021.
This semester will be completely online and done from the comfort of students’ homes. Classes will meet via Zoom once a week, 4-6 p.m. EST. Students must have access to an electronic device with the Zoom app, webcam/microphone capabilities, and an internet connection.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Ahmed Badr has specialized in photography for nearly two decades and throughout several countries. He is proud to have fought against the stereotype of going into engineering or dentistry, instead following his passion of photography. For Badr, photography is a beautiful artform that allows one the freedom of expressing passions and love of the world, while opening up the mind and finding beauty in things one traditionally would not; and blasting our mundane world with light and color. Badr’s style is a combination of photojournalism and fine-art photography, with a touch of fashion and creative lighting. His photos are inspired by light, color and techniques from black and white processing, vintage photos, creative perspective, and most importantly, the personalities of the people he photographs. Badr has been the photography instructor for AANM’s SURA Arts Academy since 2018, with his passion for photography driving him to want to share it with his community and the next generation of young artists. He believes that empowering young people with the tools of art is one of the best ways to create a better future.

Due to the pandemic, we have been closed to the public since March 13, 2020. Closed doors mean that our earned revenue streams have dried up, and corporate funds have been pivoted to assist with COVID-19 relief or for their own financial survival. We are looking forward to the day we can safely reopen, but until then, we need your support.
