Cinema Nights at the Museum + Iftar – 36 Seconds: Portrait of a Hate Crime
In-person at AANM
$20 Museum Member | $25 Student/Senior | $30 General Public
AANM and Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) are pleased to present a screening of 36 Seconds: Portrait of a Hate Crime on March 15, declared International Day to Combat Islamophobia by the UN in 2024. Immediately following the screening, participants will enjoy an intimate talkback with director Tarek Albaba, moderated by Petra Alsoofy (ISPU), and a delicious iftar meal.
Directed by Tarek Albaba, the film charts the agonizing overnight pivot from trauma to advocacy as the families of the victims struggle to prevent their loved ones’ deaths from being dismissed as the result of a random parking dispute. It traces their journey as they courageously speak the truth about the hate crime that destroyed their lives, the overt and insidious ways Islamophobia plays out in our society and the need to reform a hate crime system that is broken. The type of Islamophobia that led to the deaths of Deah Barakat, his wife Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, and her sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salh is widespread and impacts Muslims across the U.S. ISPU data shows that about a third of American Muslims experience Islamophobia in institutional settings, including in the media and legal systems.
