See the world through the lens of photography this Fall!
This semester, the SURA Arts Academy merges two major themes: Futurism and Environmentalism. In this online 10-week course open to youth aged 13-18, youth will explore elements of futurism, healing and environmentalism through the lens of a camera, and imagine what a green future looks like in their community.
For the first time, students in the metro Detroit area will be given DSLR cameras to be used for class, supplied by AANM. For students joining us outside of the metro Detroit area, a DSLR camera is required. All classes will take place online via Zoom.
With the help of local, expert photographers, students will narrate and document their reality through photography and develop skills in composition, lighting, composition and storytelling. The curriculum includes visual presentations, photography challenges, activities, discussions, critiquing and analyzing, and more. No experience required.
Students’ work will be celebrated in the annual SURA Student Photography Exhibition in late 2022.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Ahmed Badr has specialized in photography for nearly two decades and throughout several countries. He is proud to have fought against the stereotype of going into engineering or dentistry, instead following his passion of photography. For Badr, photography is a beautiful artform that allows one the freedom of expressing passions and love of the world, while opening up the mind and finding beauty in things one traditionally would not; and blasting our mundane world with light and color. Badr’s style is a combination of photojournalism and fine-art photography, with a touch of fashion and creative lighting. His photos are inspired by light, color and techniques from black and white processing, vintage photos, creative perspective, and most importantly, the personalities of the people he photographs. Badr has been the photography instructor for AANM’s SURA Arts Academy since 2018, with his passion for photography driving him to want to share it with his community and the next generation of young artists. He believes that empowering young people with the tools of art is one of the best ways to create a better future.

Due to the pandemic, we have been closed to the public since March 13, 2020. Closed doors mean that our earned revenue streams have dried up, and corporate funds have been pivoted to assist with COVID-19 relief or for their own financial survival. We are looking forward to the day we can safely reopen, but until then, we need your support.
