Connections and Contrasts: Detroit’s Arab American Artists

Through May 31, 2007

SeenThey are women and men, traditional and contemporary, natives and immigrants, students and professionals, representing three generations and working in a variety of creative mediums. The ten artists in Connections & Contrasts constitute a cross-section of passionate Arab Americans making art in the Detroit area. They share a geographical hub and ancestral links to the Arab World that inform their work, but each has forged a unique vision, fired by personal experience, education, travel and exposure to wide range of artistic influences and world events. War, immigration, nature and technology are among the subject matter represented in both figural and abstract styles. Underlying all these works is a spirit of exploration and an invitation to open one’s mind, to as-yet-unrevealed thoughts, ideas and viewpoints, as well as new ways of seeing our everyday world.
