Shantala Subramanyam grew up in a prestigious Indian musical family. Her earliest lessons were in Carnatic vocal music and the complex drumming patterns of Indian classical music. She later focused on the flute, originally as an accompanist and eventually a soloist. The southern Indian Carnatic style is largely derived from vocal music and remained less influenced by Arabic and Persian music than the northern Indian Hindustani style. In addition to Subramanyam’s dexterous flute playing, this concert features Avaneeswaram Vinu on violin and Palghat Mahesh on percussion.

Members of the ensemble will offer a workshop at 5:30 p.m., prior to the concert. Both experienced musicians and music enthusiasts are welcomed.

Indian jewelry and snacks will be available for cash purchase at the concert.

Check out a video of the ensemble HERE.

Presented in conjunction with Great Lakes Aradhana Committee (GLAC).
